GREEN WASTE (trees, leaves, grass, etc.)
Green waste includes yard waste, dead leaves, branches, grass, and natural Christmas trees, as well as cuttings from trees and shrubs.
Grasscycling and household composting are excellent solutions for disposing of your green waste. If you do not reuse these materials, Écobois Manicouagan (waste treatment center) will accept them for free. In some cases, the Town of Baie-Comeau household waste collection service may pick up these materials.
Trees and shrubs
Tree trunks, stumps, branches, posts, and other wood materials that are less than one meter long, have a diameter of five centimeters or less, and are tied in a bundle with a volume of 0.25 cubic meters or less are eligible for regular household waste collection.
Materials that do not meet these criteria will not be picked up. You may also dispose of materials yourself, free-of-charge, at Écobois Manicouagan, located between the town’s two sectors.
Christmas trees
Christmas trees are not picked up during regular household waste collection.
There is no special collection for Christmas trees.
You should dispose of your Christmas tree, free-of-charge, at Écobois Manicouagan, located between the town’s two sectors.
Dead leaves
Fall generally means a significant amount of dead leaves on the ground. Use these leaves as mulch at the base of the trees and shrubs in your yard to help retain moisture and enrich the soil.
You may also put dead leaves in your composter. They will help to balance your compost and enrich the carbon content. For additional information, consult our household composting section.
Garbage bags containing leaves are picked up during household waste collection. However, you must not exceed the number of bags allowed per collection, which is a maximum of 8.
* If you have more than the number allowed, you may dispose of your bags of leaves for free at Écobois Manicouagan.

Grass cuttings
Grasscycling is the habit of leaving grass cuttings on the ground after mowing. These cuttings are a natural source of nitrogen fertilizer for your lawn and help hydrate the soil (grass is composed largely of water) while at the same time significantly reducing your waste.
A few suggestions
- Wait until the grass is just past seven centimeters high before mowing. This will help your lawn to better maintain its moisture level in addition to preventing insects, weeds, and disease.
- Mow regularly so that grass cuttings are a centimeter long or less, since cuttings of this size decompose more quickly.
- Use a mulching mower to easily obtain cuttings that are one centimeter long or less.
Interesting possibilities
If your mower is a recent model and its motor generates 4.5 horsepower or more, it can be converted to a mulching mower at little cost. Find out about this possibility at your local dealer.
Replace your lawn with ground cover. Thyme, clover, sedum, and orpine require little maintenance and are resistant to drought, stepping, and chlorine from pools. Ground cover requires no mowing. A winning solution!
Household composting is also a way to dispose of grass cuttings for those who decide to pick them up. Compost them in small quantities to avoid bad odors. Ideally, you should let them dry on the ground before taking them up.
